Filling of Lines/Wrinkles

Filling of Lines/Wrinkles

Lines and wrinkles are smoothed out by using fillers.

The youthful appearance of our skin depends, in part, on a substance known as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found in all normal skin, and gives it its volume and fullness. Ageing, various illnesses and sun exposure are some of the factors that weaken the amount and quality of hyaluronic acid in our skin. Until recently, lines and folds in the skin were filled with collagen derived from cows. We now have products, such as Juvederm and Restylane which are non-animal-derived hyaluronic acids. These gels are fully biocompatible with the hyaluronic acid in our own skin, resulting in few side-effects and long-lasting effects. Fillers can provide excellent results in the treatment of wrinkles, folds, scars, and in augmentation of the lip.

What are Skin Fillers?

The youthful appearance of skin depends partly on hyaluronic acid – a large sugar molecule found normally in our skin. It provides volume and fullness. Aging, illnesses, and sun exposure are some factors that weaken the amount and quality of hyaluronic acid in our skin. Dermal fillers are safe, non-animal derived sugar molecules. They are fully compatible with our own hyaluronic acid, resulting in few side-effects and long-lasting results. Skin fillers give gentle, but excellent results for treatment of wrinkles, folds, scars, and lip enhancement. The result is an immediate lifting of wrinkles and plumping of lips.

How do Skin Fillers work?

The large sugar molecules are injected into the middle or deep portion of the skin using a fine, sterile needle. The location and depth of a wrinkle or fold and the type of product used will determine where the dermatologist injects the gel. The result is an immediate lifting of the wrinkle, plumping of the lips, or enhancement of the cheeks.

What is the treatment like?

The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and is quick and easy. No pre-testing is required and the results are immediate. Freezing of the area is done to ensure maximal comfort.

How long does the treatment last?

The sugar molecules are slowly and safely degraded by your body over many months.

Your skin type and lifestyle will determine how long before the effects of skin fillers disappear completely. Clients typically choose to have a touch-up done within 6 months of the original treatment.

How long have Skin Fillers been used? And is it safe?

Skin Fillers have been used in Europe for over 30 years, and in Canada for over 20 years. Millions of people worldwide have been treated. Genetically, the sugar molecules are almost identical to that found in the human body. Therefore, the skin does not tend to react to this material. In addition, because Skin Fillers are not derived from animals, there is no risk of transmitting animal borne disease and very little risk of allergic reactions.

Is the treatment painful?

Generally the treatment is very tolerable, but will depend on how sensitive you are to pain. Freezing is often used to minimize discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effects are mild swelling, redness, and tenderness at the treatment site. These symptoms mild and usually subside in a couple of days. There may be some bruising. We do not recommend this procedure within 1-2 weeks of an important social engagement or media appearance.

What areas may be treated with Skin Fillers?

Commonly treated areas include the lips and the naso-labial lines reaching from the nose to the edge of the lips, or from the lips down towards the jawline. Giving you a fuller, smoother appearance. The red border of the lips can be given more volume and a ‘pouty’ appearance. The lips can be augmented, and the lines around the lip softened. The cheeks can be given a fuller and more youthful appearance.
